The Perfect Super Bowl Food Spread

While watching the season 6 opener of Lost I saw an M&M commercial that told viewers to have M&Ms at their Super Bowl party. This got me to thinking about what else I would have at a Super Bowl party, that is, if I was going to have one. I am not a big football fan, so for me, the Super Bowl is more a time to enjoy good food and watch creative advertising than it is to watch football.

I began trying to think of the perfect Super Bowl spread.   Naturally, I turned to Google.  I started googling phrases similar to “the perfect Super Bowl spread” and “best Super Bowl spread.”  The following is what I discovered.

The spreads I stumbled upon on Google images varied from the classic…

To the creative…

To the decadent…

I also found that celebrity chefs like to weigh in on their Super Bowl spread preferences. Rachel Ray made Philly Cheesesteak Crostinis and Sour Cream and Onion Chicken Tenders with Jerry Rice for the 2007 Super Bowl. One of Paula Dean’s favorites is Super Bowl chili biscuits pictured below.

These are the foods that seemed to make the most Super Bowl appearances:

Chicken Wings
Sloppy Joes
DIPS, DIPS, DIPS (usually guacamole, spinach & artichoke, and buffalo chicken dip [I don’t think I’ve ever had this])
Pizza
Taco station
Chips
Chili
Pinwheels
Mini Hot Dogs

After all this research, I determined there is no such thing as the “perfect” Super Bowl spread.  There are too many options for just one to be perfect.  Here is what I decided is my perfect Super Bowl spread:

M&Ms (they started the whole thing, after all)
Homemade Guacamole
Trader Joe’s Veggie and Flaxseed Tortilla Chips
Taco Station (also with ground turkey option)
Veggies and Spinach Dip
Deviled Eggs
Chicken Wings
Brownies (I think these will come out at half-time)

… and TOUCHDOWN!

What’s yours?

Not a bad spread, but I think mine would be a little different.

Pizza – Its just not the Super Bowl without my favorite food.
Chicken Wings – Hmm buffalo sauce is my favorite.
    Chips and Salsa/Gauc
    Veggies and Dip
Jambalaya – After all, its almost Mardi Gras and the Saints are in the Super Bowl.
And beer. Cheap PBR and New Glarus Spotted Cow would work.
