Kentucky Grilled Chicken? – Kentucky Grilled Chicken review

A few months back, KFC did the unthinkable and launched a new, healthier alternative to their classic fried chicken, Kentucky Grilled Chicken. I’m a little disappointed that KFC has thrown the towel in and by joining the healthy food movement, especially after the disaster that was their attempted at rotisserie chicken a decade or so ago.
KFC also attempted a failed free chicken give-away that they promoted on Oprah and Oprah.com. Now not only is Oprah telling us what to read, who to vote for, but also what fast food to eat. The coupon was apparently a colossal fail. I personally tried printing a free coupon, but had an error and was unable to. I heard stories about friends that were printing hundreds at a time. My local KFC was even refusing to accept the coupons. I wish I would have taken a shot of that. For more information check out this article.
On to the chicken. A couple weeks back shortly after the chicken launch I stopped into the local KFC to try and review the new Kentucky Grilled Chicken. It was really difficult walking into KFC and ordering grilled chicken. All I wanted was some Extra Crispy™ (extra tasty). I went with the breast and wing combo. See below. As you can see, the grill marks look a little artificial; like they were rubbed on with a charcoal brush. How did it taste? Not bad, but nowhere near the best grilled chicken I’ve ever had. The chicken was cooked thoroughly, with a crispy outside and mildly seasoned skin. It could definitely use some more spice, and somehow the overall consistency was not what I’m used to with grilled chicken. The breast meat was a little on the dry side, and the wing really lacked meat.
Nutrition facts: A Kentucky Grilled Chicken breast has only 180 calories and 4 grams of fat. An Original RecipeTM breast has 370 calories and 35 grams of fat. Wow. That’s twice as many calories as the grilled breast and nine times the fat. The Extra CrispyTM packs 490 calories and 280 grams of fat. I don’t even want to think about how many grilled breasts that is. To see all of KFC’s nutrition facts, check out here.
Overall, I think KFC’s new grilled chicken has a chance. Its no where near as good as their fried chicken, but at half the calories its a good option for those of us trying to eat healthier. Just watch the sides fatty.

This is like the Coke-Zero approach to healthier food. Coke-Zero is in a nice dark-bold can, not like 98% of all other diet drinks in light-colored cans. It doesn’t hide the fact it’s zero calorie, but it doesn’t tout it much either, focusing on it’s deliciousness more.
This is a similar approach. It’s healthier and they aren’t hiding it, but they are focusing more on showing off how good it looks and tastes.
