Here’s to you Gidget…Taco Bell’s Bacon Cheesy Potato Burrito Review

By Jesse | July 31, 2009

In tribute of the recently deceased Gidget, the Taco Bell Chihuahua, Fast Food Reviewed decided to make another run for the Border, this time for a review of Taco Bell’s new Bacon Cheesy Potato Burrito. Truthfully, I was making a run to the Wisconsin-Illinois border, and happened to stop for a late lunch at Belvedere Oasis. It truly is an oasis of fast food, featuring such fine establishments as McDonald’s, Panda Express and even Auntie Anne’s (pretzels). Its also a great place to observe America’s increasing obesity epidemic.

I’ve been waiting to review the new Bacon Cheesy Potato Burrito. Taco John’s long ago introduced America to what had currently been the most un-Mexican Mexican food in existence, The Meat and Potato Burrito. If this creation wasn’t enough of a horror, the genius product designers at Taco Bell had to one up Taco John’s with their own Frankenstein monster, the Bacon Cheesy Potato Burrito. Not only does this burrito combine the classic American duo of meat and potatoes, but it adds in Bacon and processed cheese, America’s new diet busting duo. But honestly, how can I be surprised that Taco Bell would come out with such a thing, especially after other monstrosities like the Crunch Wrap Supreme, The Volcano Taco (it has a red shell for God’s sake), and another classic hybrid, the Mexican Pizza.

The unwrapped burrito.

I dove into the Bacon Cheesy Potato with trepidation. The first bite was exactly what I expected, a gooey, beefy, cheesy, bacony mess. However, the overwhelming taste experience was salt. This had to be one of the saltiest things I can remember eating from a restaurant in a while, and that should come as no surprise with its 2,160 mg of sodium, a full 94% of daily sodium intake. Find more nutritional information here. Take a look at the insides:

Now compare that inside to the one on the website. Hmm…not quite the same is it? One thing I’m still trying to figure out is, what exactly is that white stuff in the middle of the photo on the website? Sour cream?

The worst part about the Bacon Cheesy Potato Burrito is that I actually enjoyed eating it. I think its because I hadn’t eaten anything all day and had barely slept the night before. I’m disgusted with myself for enjoying it. However, I can’t really recommend this to my readers. Its just too salty and too processed. I would not order this if you have any regard for your body.
