Good, Better, Best – Review of the Three Burgers on the Wendy’s Dollar Menu

Let me just say this so you all can hear it:

The dollar menu is what makes Wendy’s GREAT.

Wendy’s is pretty good anyway. They have a solid grasp on what makes a badass fast food hamburger, and they aren’t afraid to flaunt it. Square patties? That just shows they care. They want to be spending money on quality product, not shipping air. You know they be fitting more burgers-to-the-box with squares. But burgers isn’t all Wendy’s does right. Their spicy chicken is a leader in this industry. Perhaps only rivaled by the spicy chicken from Jack in the Box. Remember when McDonalds tried their hand in “Premium” chicken sandwiches. Please.

I could go on and on, but seriously, all that does is prove that Wendy’s is good. But Wendy’s isn’t good, it’s GREAT. And that’s all thanks to a dollar menu that just won’t quit. I could be wrong (I don’t think I am), that Wendy’s pioneered this whole Dollar Menu thing. So it makes sense that their’s knocks the diapers off everyone elses. Baked potato? check. Chili in which to pour over my awesome baked potato? check. A fricking totally decent milkshake? check. That’s three dollars right there people. I’ll let you do the calories per dollar math.

But I’m not here to talk about baked potatoes. I’m here to talk about burgers. Right now, Wendy’s is offering not one, not two, but three burger choices on their dollar menu: The Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, The Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe, and the Double Stack. So let’s have a look.

Wendy’s Double Stack (The Good)

wendys-doublestack.jpg

The double stack is on-again, off-again on the dollar menu. At the time of this writing, it’s on. Sometimes it even changes name. Tricky little bastard. It’s even “on special” right now, with giant advertisements all over the building for it. But really, this is nothing new. It’s your standard double-small-patty burger. Two patties, two slices of cheese. Ketchup. Mayo. It’s solid. It’s meaty. This burger isn’t going to do you wrong. I throughly enjoyed this burger and to be honest, sometimes you just want a simple burger. This is a good choice for those times and for a dollar, you aren’t going to do much better.

McDonalds also has a “double cheeseburger” in the dollar market. I really don’t want to dis on the McD’s double-dubs since I find it, under most circumstances, a decent buy. But this Double Stack is a step above, and at the exact same price. If you are in the mood for a straight-up-no-frills double cheez and you are staring at a McDonald’s and a Wendy’s, you need to turn that M upside down baby.

Four patties out of five.

Wendy’s Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe (The Better)

This is where things start getting interesting. Don’t let the “Jr.” part fool you, this is a very decently sized burger, and with all the quality fixin’s I like on a burger. Single patty w/ cheese, lettuce, onions, tomato, ketchup, mayo, pickle. This is how I make my burgers at home. The fact that this burger is on the dollar menu is amazing, and why Wendy’s is a cut above. You could use this as a home-base for building your own little combo meal, or just toss it on the combo meal you are already getting for a nice little after-dinner bonus.

4 1/2 patties out of five.

Wendy’s Jr. Bacon Deluxe (The Best)

Hot damn! You can get bacon on it too! If I didn’t know better I would think they are taking a loss on this burger. Single patty w/ cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mayo. So what did we have to sacrifice to get the bacon? The onions and the pickle. A shame really. I like me some pickles and onions, but I’ll kick them out of bed for some bacon any night. If I was a betting man I would wager that onions and pickles are the most-often-picked-off things on fast food burgers anyway. So if that’s you, the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger is like your dream come true.

As I write this, it brings tears to my eyes. So good. So cheap. Baaaacon.

Five patties out of five!
