Fast Food at Home

By chriscoyier | February 2, 2010

I’ve attempted to recreate a number of popular fast food items at home in the past few months. Check it.

Big Macs

Crappy white buns, the middle one being a “bottom” with the bottom sawed off. I couldn’t find seasame seed ones with the sufficient level of crappiness, but I should have looked harder. I used “Shreds”, prepackaged shredded lettuce which I actually think is a sweet product. American pasteurized processed cheese food slices, of course. Then painfully thin beef, pan-fried, cheesed, and tossed onto the bun with the shreds, diced onion, thinly sliced pickles, and the “secret sauce” (thousand-island salad dressing).

Quiznos Sub

Italian sub-loaf style bread, with sliced turkey, and provolone, baked in the over broiler-style. My intention was to make the “Turkey Bacon Guacamole” sub. I even bought Guac (don’t ever do that, under normal circumstances, make your own), and then forgot to put it on. Boooo. The results were good though. Again I used shreds for the lettuce. Sliced Roma tomatoes and jalapenos (my favorite part about Quiznos is the pepper bar).

The Steak Escape

More italian-thin-loaf-whatever style bread. This time I cooked the steak first, pan style, although I should have fired up the real grill. I used a kick ass ribeye, which made the sandwich absolutely unreal, and was probably kind of a waste of a steak that good. I cooked the ribeye about medium, sliced it, put some banana peppers and mozzarella cheese over it and tossed it in the toaster over to melt the cheese. Finished off with mayonnaise and Shreds.

The Steak Escape is more really thin style steak and onions and peppers, good, but not this good. I actually used half the steak for one, then immediately went back and made another one with the other half.

The burgers look a lot like Big Macs, but they look EXACTLY like Del Taco’s double cheeseburgers. Well done.

Wow, I’m pretty impressed. Your “recreations” look pretty good. Did you actually eat two “big macs”?!

These are pretty awesome recreations. I agree about the Big Mac, so hard to do the McDonald’s way. I have long tried to recreate it, but I can never quite pull it off. $2.50 is worth just going to get the real deal.
