I’ve attempted to recreate a number of popular fast food items at home in the past few months. Check it.

Big Macs

Crappy white buns, the middle one being a “bottom” with the bottom sawed off. I couldn’t find seasame seed ones with the sufficient level of crappiness, but I should have looked harder. I used “Shreds”, prepackaged shredded lettuce which I actually think is a sweet product. American pasteurized processed cheese food slices, of course. Then painfully thin beef, pan-fried, cheesed, and tossed onto the bun with the shreds, diced onion, thinly sliced pickles, and the “secret sauce” (thousand-island salad dressing).

Quiznos Sub

Italian sub-loaf style bread, with sliced turkey, and provolone, baked in the over broiler-style. My intention was to make the “Turkey Bacon Guacamole” sub. I even bought Guac (don’t ever do that, under normal circumstances, make your own), and then forgot to put it on. Boooo. The results were good though. Again I used shreds for the lettuce. Sliced Roma tomatoes and jalapenos (my favorite part about Quiznos is the pepper bar).

The Steak Escape

More italian-thin-loaf-whatever style bread. This time I cooked the steak first, pan style, although I should have fired up the real grill. I used a kick ass ribeye, which made the sandwich absolutely unreal, and was probably kind of a waste of a steak that good. I cooked the ribeye about medium, sliced it, put some banana peppers and mozzarella cheese over it and tossed it in the toaster over to melt the cheese. Finished off with mayonnaise and Shreds.

The Steak Escape is more really thin style steak and onions and peppers, good, but not this good. I actually used half the steak for one, then immediately went back and made another one with the other half.

Welcome to a new blog/post category, Slow Food. This is the place where I talk about any food non-fast food related item or eating experience that I think is worth sharing with the world.

First up are home made pizza’s from Trader Joe’s. I’m a big fan of Trader Joes and last weekend I dusted off my rusty pizza making skills using Trader Joe’s pre-made crusts. (I spent four years in high school making pizzas). I made two pizzas using Trader Joe’s pre-made crusts. I neglected to write down the name of the brand, but tried both the wheat and white crusts with pepperoni and a ton of veggies. Check them out.

You have to admit, those are some fine looking pizzas.

They turned out really well. The crusts were pretty crispy and a little thick, similar to the crust you would find on a Red Baron Frozen Pizza. Its been a long time since I’ve had a Boboli crust, but I would place this on par with one. I also used sauce, cheese and toppings from Trader Joe’s, all of which turned out great.

I would definitely recommend picking one of these up. They also sell pizza dough, I’m looking forward to practicing my pizza tossing skills with it next time.
